Here is our boat with a 150 Mercury black max. we top out at about 57!! Verry fast boat! The boat is a 1988 Pro craft Fish and Ski. also we had quite a roost...My 1986 Mercury 150 XR2 Black Max cranks up and runs but when I put in the water it will not go the engine will die. I checked the fire and 3 cylinders are not firing. I also crossed the blue and red wires on the power packs and the same cylinders were out after firing engine back up. What you should have on the rectifier is 5 wires. 2 yellows, 2 reds, and a gray. (it is possible that you have 1 extra black wire, and if you do, it's a ground). The 2 yellows should go to the stator, the 2 reds tie together and go to the starter solenoid where the battery cable connects. My 88 XR4 is a 2.4 wid a clamshell cowl. I think the difference between them is XR2 is 2.0l, XR4 is 2.4l. XR6 is 2.5l. They are all strong 150's. XR2 and XR4 came with 4 1/4 in lowers. XR6 came with either 4 1/4 or 4 3/4 in lower.
