Groundmass

This andesite is so packed with plagioclase and hornblende phenocrysts that it almost looks coarse-grained. A close look (photo below) reveals a fine-grained gray groundmass surrounding the phenocrysts. The orangish coloring on some of the grains is iron staining. The black phenocrysts are hornblende, the white crystals are plagioclase.

Although Ti-rich garnets are commonly encountered in the groundmass of many alkaline igneous rocks, they are comparatively rare in kimberlites. Here we report on the occurrence of Ti-rich garnets in the groundmass of the P-15 and KL-3 kimberlites from the diamondiferous Wajrakarur field in the Eastern Dharwar craton of southern India. These …

An igneous rock that has a medium-gray, fine-grained groundmass with large crystals of plagioclase: A) formed as the lava flow that produced it was quenched in …(groundmass). Aphanitic - fine-grained texture; minerals not visible to the naked eye; relatively fast rates of cooling/ solidification prevent the formation of large crystals. Vesicular -voids created by rapid cooling which causes air bubbles to be trapped inside. While thin sections offer a highly accurate representation for the voids and pores of the ceramic fabric, thick sections prove to be useful for imaging the temper particles which often, due to their silicaceous consistency, have poor contrast to the clay groundmass (Berg, 2008: 1186; Carr, 1990; Foster, 1985; Middleton, 2005: 76).

Large melt inclusion trapped in olivine in 12002. The melt inclusion has crystallized to ilmenite and an intergrowth of plagioclase and pyroxene. Porphyritic basalt or basalt porphyry describes basalt rocks with large crystals known as phenocrysts dispersed in a fine-grain matrix or groundmass. So, the word porphyry (pronounced as POR-fə-ree) is a textural term, and rocks with this texture are said to be porphyritic.…

In contrast, information about groundmass composition and fabric is relatively limited, with some exceptions (e.g., FitzPatrick, 1984, FitzPatrick, 1993 ). Nevertheless, the groundmass is commonly an important source of information about the nature of the parent material and about pedogenic processes.Basalt/gabbro S High Red garnets scattered uniformly throughout a finer-grained green groundmass (bright-green pyroxene: omphacite). May have quartz, kyanite, or biotite. Serpentinite Peridotite H Med-high Green, mottled, massive. Smooth, rounded slippery surfaces. Can be black or reddish. The groundmass spinel s.s. is found locally replaced by fine-grained aggregates of meixnerite (Mg 6 Al 2 (OH) 16 (OH) 2 · 4H 2 O) at the rim. The second spinel-group mineral found in the groundmass is MUM, and it shows an euhedral outline (Figure 2c); it is also found as the last phase replacing Mg-rich ilmenite and rutile macrocrysts (Figure ...

General term from the fine-grained, not discernible part of a rock. In igneous rocks, this is the part of the rock that is not phenocrysts, and can help in determining the composition of extrusive rocks. In sedimentary rocks, it typically refers to the fine-grained components, namely mud.A phenocryst is an early forming, relatively large and usually conspicuous crystal distinctly larger than the grains of the rock groundmass of an igneous rock. Such rocks that have a distinct difference in the size of the crystals are called porphyries, and the adjective porphyritic is used to describe them. 2.2 Macam Batuan Beku. ALV830 groundmass values range from 0.703018 ± 14 to 0.703026 ± 13. During eruption, the remaining liquid phase in the magma chamber is rapidly cooled to produce the groundmass (usually composed of microphenocrysts). The proportion of phenocrysts to groundmass can vary from rock to rock, but volcanic rocks with a porphyritic texture typically have a greater abundance of groundmass. kansas arkansas bowl gamesanna strom The large crystals are called phenocrysts and the fine-grained matrix is called the groundmass or matrix. Porphyritic texture indicates the magma body underwent a multi-stage cooling history, cooling slowly while deep under the surface and later rising to a shallower depth or the surface where it cooled more quickly.
