What I can learn from research is that the Python was originally intended to be a 38 special target revolver. The changeover to the magnum was a last minute type of thing. Some say that the King Cobra was Colt's tacit admission that the Python wasn't designed for a steady diet of magnum loads becasue that model will handle the round.The new Python is beefy and was engineered to absolutely outlast the old Python design and digest a high diet of SAAMI-max .357 rounds. If longevity is your desire, then that's a big perk.
