Same heads, same compression, same cam, just different displacement. As you can see they both peak at 300 hp, but the HP is found lower on the 383 and there is an additional 30-40 lb-ft of torque down low. Or, should I go for cubic inches and build the 400 small block, with the ever popular controversy of the over-heating problem.

C3 Tech/Performance - Which cam for my 383 - Lunati Voodoo 270/278 or Comp cams XR270HR? - I have a stock 1980 L48, recently rebuilt 350, long tube headers. However, the same time/money spent in other areas will likely generate better results. Last edited by Corvette Kiwi; 05-16-2011 at 02:11 PM.

BTW if you want a nice street drivable combo a 383 or 406 built with the milder crower cam, a dual plane intake like the edelbrock air gap, similar to the engine combo listed above, makes for a very effective street strip engine thats far easier to drive, notice the torque curve is almost instantly available and a 3000 stall converter and a 3.73:1 rear gear makes it run great, and its long term ...

Another pedestrian 383 in the works and I've a quick question regarding SCAT's 9000 series crankshafts. Plenty of hits here searching but nothing specific. The collection of parts is looking to keep peak RPMs to 6000. Maybe a couple of hundred more for some overspeed headroom. HP and TQ are not going to exceed 500. In street trim, I'd expect ...

The longer rod gives more duration at tdc and yes you can run higher comp on them if I rember right. yes you have to use special pistons, it allows you to rev higher but I think if any thing it hurts torque. My machinest said more often than not people like the 5.7's more. I guess its up to your conditions though.Hell, a zero decked flat top 383 with 64cc heads is over 11:1 compression. With a 4cc dome, (the typical flat topped style dome that is about .100-.125" tall that mimics the old factory LT-1 piston for the 350), when used with a typical .041" thick gasket and a uncut block a 383 is still 11.55:1 compression.I am very happy with the throttle response also. I haven't tried a dual plane on it. With the solid roller and the 210 heads you 406 should really want to rpm. I just had a 406 built that I hope will be around 550hp. I will list the parts below. Keep in mind that I will be really happy with 550 hp. You have to compare apples to apples -- with the same brand and type pistons, same brand and type rods. Here's an example that will have you scratch your head. But it's harder to make that power because the bore/stroke relationship is more "truck-like." If you think about a pro-stock engine, they are large bore short stroke and so they have very good cylinder fill characteristics.

These cams have a very aggressive idle and explosive power right off idle. This cam will pull hard to 5000/5500 rpm. Vacuum will be low (9" - 11") Recurved distributor, HP ignition, dual exhaust or headers, 4bbl low rise type manifold. 7-8.5:1 compression with iron heads in small blocks, 7.5 to 8.5:1 in big blocks.

you would have about 10.5:1 with a 350 but closer to 11.4:1 with a 383, theres 43.75 cubic inches of volume in a 350s cylinder and 47.8 cubic inches of volume in a 383s cylinder. it should be rather obvious that increasing the compression changes the fuel octane requirements.
